Seville Cathedral

About
What It Is
Seville Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral located on Avenida de la Constitución in Seville, Andalusia, Spain. Construction began in 1402, and the final stone of the original dome was placed on 10 October 1506, though building and modification continued well into the 16th century and beyond. [2] The structure was built on the site of a former mosque and is part of the Seville old town. [1] It has held UNESCO World Heritage Site status since 1987 and was designated a bien de interés cultural from 1 August 1929. [1]
The building measures 116 metres in length, 76 metres in width, and rises to 105 metres in height, covering an area of 2.4 hectares. [1] Its architectural style is Gothic, with Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical additions accumulated over subsequent centuries. [1][2]
Activities & Experiences
Visitors can explore the Gothic interior, including the Main Altarpiece, the Choir, side chapels, and the principal doorways. [2] The Patio de los Naranjos (Courtyard of the Orange Trees), the Giralda tower, the Royal Chapel, the Chapter House, the Main Sacristy, and the Baroque Sagrario are all accessible as part of the cultural visit. [2]
Several specialist guided tours are available. The stained glass tour takes visitors through triforia, galleries, and chapels to examine what the cathedral describes as the most extensive and best-preserved stained glass collection in Spain, running approximately one and a half hours. [3] The De Profundis tour focuses on the collection of archbishops' tombs, including first-time cultural access to the crypt of the archbishops in the Parish of the Sagrario, and includes live sacred music performed by Arcadiantiqua. [4] A rooftop visit and a guided tour combining the cathedral and the Giralda are also offered. [2]

What Makes It Distinctive
Seville Cathedral holds UNESCO World Heritage Site status and occupies a site with continuous religious significance stretching back to the period when a mosque stood there before the Gothic structure was raised. [1] Its stained glass collection is identified by the cathedral itself as the most extensive and best preserved in Spain, and specialist tours allow close-up access to these windows at visitor level. [3]
The building integrates Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical phases into a single complex, making it a layered record of European ecclesiastical architecture across several centuries. [1][2] The De Profundis tour offers access to the archbishops' crypt that is not available during a standard cultural visit, adding a dimension not commonly found at comparable heritage sites. [4]
