Statue of Liberty

About
What It Is
The Statue of Liberty, formally titled Liberty Enlightening the World, is a colossal neoclassical copper sculpture standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, New York City. [2] Designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi with a metal framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel, the statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States and was dedicated on October 28, 1886. [2] It depicts a robed woman holding a torch aloft in her right hand and a tablet inscribed with the date July 4, 1776 in her left, while her left foot rests on a broken chain symbolizing the abolition of slavery. [2] Designated a National Monument in 1924, it has been administered by the National Park Service since 1933. [1]
Activities & Experiences
Visitors to Liberty Island can explore the grounds, view the statue at close range, and tour the Statue of Liberty Museum, which houses artifacts and exhibits including the original torch. [1] Tickets with Pedestal Reserve access allow entry inside the monument and access to the balcony at the top of the pedestal, offering views of New York Harbor and the statue above. [4] Crown Reserve tickets permit visitors to climb the interior spiral staircase to the crown, where windows look out just above the statue's face. [1] Ellis Island, home to the National Museum of Immigration, is included in the same ferry ticket and can be visited on the same day. [4]
Practical Access
Statue City Cruises is the sole authorized ferry operator providing access to Liberty Island and Ellis Island, departing from two locations: Castle Clinton at Battery Park in New York City, and Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. [3] The New York departure point is accessible by major subway lines and bus routes; the New Jersey departure point offers ample parking and highway access from the New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate 78. [4] All ticket tiers include round-trip ferry transportation, admission to both island museums, and self-guided audio tours; National Park Service ranger-led programs are also available subject to availability. [4] Crown Reserve tickets sell out up to 90 days in advance and require a minimum height of 42 inches. [4]
Restrictions
Public access to the torch has been barred since 1916. [2] Crown Reserve tickets require visitors to be at least 42 inches tall. [4] Advanced reservations are required for group visits due to safety protocols and space limitations. [3] Free cancellations are available only when made at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure. [4]
What Makes It Distinctive
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognized monuments in the world, functioning simultaneously as a work of 19th-century engineering, a symbol of democratic ideals, and a record of the Franco-American relationship. [2] Unlike most large monuments, it offers tiered interior access, from ground-level viewing up through the pedestal balcony and into the crown itself, each level providing a substantially different experience. [1][4] Its pairing with Ellis Island under a single ticket connects the monument directly to the history of American immigration, giving visitors two major historical sites in one trip. [3]
