About

What It Is

Canandaigua Lake is a Finger Lake situated in Ontario County in western New York State, roughly 24 miles south of Rochester [3]. It is the westernmost of the major Finger Lakes and the fourth largest among them by surface area [1]. The lake stretches 15.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, with a total shoreline of 35.9 miles [1]. Its name derives from a Seneca word meaning "the chosen spot" or "at the chosen town" [1].

The lake serves as the sole drinking water source for the city and town of Canandaigua, as well as several surrounding communities including Rushville, Newark, Palmyra, and Gorham township [1]. Its water quality is exceptional: in April 2013 and 2017, it was voted the best drinking water in New York State by the New York section of the American Water Works Association [1].

Activities & Experiences

Fishing is a major draw, with the lake supporting lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, bluegill, pumpkinseed, rock bass, black crappie, and bullheads [1]. The lake's well-oxygenated water allows fish to inhabit both shallow and deep zones, and water clarity reaches 30 to 50 feet below the surface [1]. Canandaigua Lake State Marine Park, at the northern end of the lake in the city of Canandaigua, provides a boat launch for powerboats and fishing access [1].

Visitors can take public cruises aboard the Canandaigua Lady, a double-decker paddlewheel steamboat replica operating from May through October [1]. The Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail connects wineries, breweries, bed and breakfasts, hotels, shops, and restaurants around the lake [1]. County Road 12 along the southern end of the lake near Naples is recognized for scenic lake views and is a popular fall foliage drive, with the South Bristol Overlook also located along this route [1].

Practical Access

The City of Canandaigua sits at the northern end of the lake and serves as the primary gateway [1]. Canandaigua Lake State Marine Park offers a boat launch and fishing access from May to mid-October [1]. The town of Canandaigua is approximately 24 miles south of Rochester [3], making the lake accessible as a day trip or short getaway from that city.

The lake draws visitors year-round, with annual events spread across all seasons [3]. About 97 percent of the 35.9-mile shoreline is privately held, with only 1.2 miles, or 3 percent, publicly accessible [1].

Restrictions

Bowfishing and spearfishing are strictly prohibited on the lake [1]. The vast majority of the shoreline, approximately 97 percent, is private property, which limits public waterfront access to a small number of designated points [1].

What Makes It Distinctive

Canandaigua Lake holds a notable place in both natural and cultural history. Skenoh Island, located near the northern end of the lake, is the smallest Fish and Wildlife Management Area in New York State and one of only two islands in the entire Finger Lakes chain [1]. The island contains an extremely rare geological formation of calcified algae deposits locally called "water biscuits," found in few other places [1]. The Seneca recall using the island to shelter women and children during the Sullivan Expedition of 1779 [1].

The lake also carries deep historical significance as the site near which the Treaty of Canandaigua was signed between Native Americans and white settlers, with the original parchment bearing the names of chiefs including Red Jacket and Cornplanter [1]. Its steamboat heritage, running from 1827 to 1935 and continued today by the Canandaigua Lady replica, adds a living layer of regional history [1]. The combination of award-winning water quality, multi-species fishing, wine trail access, scenic fall drives, and Seneca cultural heritage makes this lake distinctive among the Finger Lakes.
